Updated Bat Survey Guidelines

29 February 2016

The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) has now published the third edition of ‘Bat Surveys for Professional Ecologists: Good Practice Guidelines'. The guidelines have been revised, updated and reviewed by experts, forming the most relevant and principal reference guide for professional ecologists working with bats.

Bats and their roosts can be impacted by a range of development activities. Where there is a risk of bats being affected by proposals, irrespective of whether planning consent is required for the work or not, a bat survey may need to be undertaken. Examples of activities that may prompt the need for a bat survey include:

  • Conversion, modification, renovation, demolition or removal of buildings and/or structures,
  • Felling, removal or lopping of trees (particularly mature trees), works affecting woodland, modifying/removing hedgerows;
  • Introduction of lighting;
  • Developments that impact on semi-natural habitats;
  • Proposals located near or adjacent to quarries, gravel pits, natural cliff faces; and
  • Wind farm developments.

Our team of qualified and experienced ecologists can provide you with free and relevant advice in all aspects of bat survey works and mitigation.

Whether you are a homeowner or a developer, we will collaborate with you through the planning process to meet your obligations in respect of ecology, and secure necessary consents and/or protected species licences in respect of bats that may be required.
