Phase 1 Habitat

ECOSA have extensive experience in carrying out Phase 1 habitat surveys, which is the standard method for classifying habitat in the United Kingdom. The habitat classification system is based on vegetation characteristics, whereby a site is mapped on the basis of standard vegetation types, colours and codes.

ECOSA believe that accurate habitat surveys are the fundamental basis of ecological work and Phase 1 surveys are used in a wide range of ecological situations, although most typically allow an initial assessment of a site to be made. This allows the identification of potentially important areas of on site habitat which may require further Phase 2 surveys such as
National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys or protected species surveys.

ECOSA believe that accurate marine survey data is of upmost importance as this data enables comparisons between sites to be made and provides a comprehensive baseline for which to assess potential impacts and to devise appropriate mitigation strategies.
