Phase I Habitat Survey

The Phase I habitat survey is a standard method for classifying habitat in the United Kingdom. The habitat classification system is based on vegetation characteristics. A site is mapped on the basis of standard vegetation types, colours and codes.

Phase I surveys are used in a wide range of ecological situations, although most typically allow an initial assessment of a site to be made. This allows the identification of potentially important areas for further Phase II surveys such as National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys or protected species surveys. The Phase I survey will form the basis for further site assessment.
